Sanitary Bucket Emergency Readiness Kit

One of the most vital activities for Emergency Readiness is to have a way to maintain sanitary practices if the water pressure and sewer systems are out of order.

You can make up a ‘home-made’ 5 gallon Porta-Potti bucket very easily. Here’s how: Purchase a five gallon bucket with a matching cover, a box of 13 gallon plastic bags for effluent collection. The extra bags are good for storage of jackets or other clothing, two rolls of toilet paper, liquid hand cleaner, an extra pair of stockings, and a ten pound bag of scented kitty litter. Store these items in the bucket and keep either in your automobile trunk or in a closet at home or assemble one for home and one in your automobile. Be sure to triple the effluent collection bags to prevent accidental leakage.

To extend the usefulness of the kit, you may also wish to include several thermal blankets, (4) 16-0z bottles of water, four energy bars, and a roll of paper towels to extend the short-term survival capacity of this self-help project. This little bit of food and water could help you make it till help arrives. Just pick up the items while you are doing your normal food shopping. Assembly of the contents takes only a couple of minutes. It doesn’t get any easier than that! Additional 5 gallon buckets could serve to store extra water, food, medications, flashlights, and other survival items. Assemble a kit for each family member to include food, water, rain-shelter and warmth. Oversized garbage bags make good emergency rain protection wear.

The HTNA Emergency Readiness effort of the HTNA is intended to encourage individual and home readiness for emergencies. In addition it is hoped that citizens adopt the philosophy that people helping people is a foundation of effective community survival and recovery from events that compromise citizens well-being.
